Family loses ‘Stratego’ suit

A Springfield woman and her siblings’ claim that Hasbro, Inc., infringed on their copyright with the popular board game “Stratego” has been denied by a federal judge in Portland.

Heidi Cox, of Springfield, and her relatives claimed their late father, Gunter Sigmund Elkan, developed a game he called “Strategy” that was similar to the popular Hasbro game.

They relied on a 1948 rejection letter from the Milton Bradley Company that they found among his personal papers to bolster the case that the game’s concept was stolen.

The company, now owned by Hasbro, began producing “Stratego” in 1961.

In court, Hasbro pinpointed the origin of “Stratego” to Dutchman Jacques Johan Mogendorff in 1942. The company has paid millions in royalties to Mogendorff’s family.

In a 12-page ruling, a U.S. district judge found that Hasbro disproved the Elkan claim of ownership.

If you own a copy of the 1990 Accolade Stratego program and lost your code wheel, this wonderfully written utility will come in very handy. It is a Windows program and is so intuitive no directions are necessary.

The author has requested to remain anonymous but is willing to offer it here for your convenience. It is zipped up and will require WinZip or something equivalent to extract the single executable file.

Note: The program requires the file vbrun300.dll to be present in your windows/system directory. If you do not have a copy of this file, you may download it here.

Above is a partial screenshot
of the program.

THE GAMES HALL OF FAME

In 1984, GAMES Magazine created their Games Hall of Fame to honor games that have met or exceeded the highest standard of quality and play value and have been continuously in production for at least 10 years. Once inducted, a game remains in the Hall of Fame as long is it continues to be available.

Stratego is one of the games listed in this Hall of Fame.

(Currently, the other members are Acquire, Axis & Allies, Blockhead, Bridgette, Civilization, Clue, Diplomacy, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Mille Bornes, Monopoly, Othello, Pente, Risk, Scrabble Crossword Game, The Settlers of Catan, Sorry, Taboo, Tribond, Trivial Pursuit, Twister, Twixt, and Yahtzee.)

Here's what Jon Freeman had to say about Stratego in the 1979 book The Playboy Winner's Guide to Board Games A review of Accolade's 1990 Stratego computer game, from the January 1991 issue of Computer Gaming World Michael Ziegler, publisher of Fountainhead Books, is offering a 72 page booklet on Stratego!
